Artsy Wednesday: Disney

I've been wanting to try a waterfall manicure for a while, and while I don't think I quite nailed it on the first try, I did end up with a neat manicure.

I used Disney's Snow White as my inspiration, with my middle nail as the skirt of her dress, my index and pinkie as the sleeves of her dress, and my ring as her face/lip/hair color.  I think this turned out a little eerie looking, but frankly the original Snow White story is pretty creepy, so I'm down with how slightly spooky this turned out!

Artsy Wednesday: Green

Cloud mani time!  I tried a cloud manicure once before and it was a total disaster, but this holo'splosion of a manicure covers up the bruises and warts of my freehanding pretty well.  The layers, from cuticle to tip, are China Club Angel Kiss, Avon Starlight, and China Glaze Kismet.  I love the Halo Hues so much, and the scattered, more muted holo of Starlight really helps set off the different shades of the Halo Hues!

Artsy Wednesday: Three Colors

It's never too early to start thinking about Halloween, and so I did a fall-ish, Halloweeny manicure to get me in a spooky mood.  I used Sally Hansen Lickety Split Lime as the base, then Slick Slate and Sun Kissed for stamping, using the LeaLC B plate.  I'm pretty pleased with the result!

Artsy Wednesday: Inspired by Animation, Adventure Time Nails!

Adventure time!  C'mon grab your friends, we'll go to very distant lands.  With Jake the Dog, all over my nails, the fun it never ends, Adventure Time!

Using Pretty n' Polished "I'm Not a Banana" and Zoya's Creamy, I was able to create the perfect Jake the Dog manicure. I'm pretty proud of how this turned out, it's so cute!

Artsy Wednesday: Inspired by a Designer

BOB MACKIE.  How can you not, when looking for inspiration for a nail polish look?

Feathery swirls, bright metallics, sequins, thank goodness for Bob Mackie!

Artsy Wednesday: Two Colors

NEONNNN!
I chose neon yellow (China Glaze Celtic Sun), and a neon pink (Zoya Ali), to create a yellow and neon orange (yay color theory!) saran wrap manicure!  I love this for summer, and it goes nicely with my new Curlformer curlers (which I purchased with my own money).

NEON!

Artsy Wednesday: Sewn Patches

I've been a bad blogger lately, but I have a good reason!
Here's my reason:

My nails, in front of our chicken coop, while I stand on the front porch of our new house!

And here's my sewn patches manicure, close up!  I went for a gingham theme with this one, to adequately reflect the fact that my boyfriend and I have moved onto a lovely piece of land where we can raise our chickens and generally enjoy the outdoors!

Anyway, apologies for being AWOL for a while; with moving and renovating (we got a foreclosure), I've been too busy and too hard on my hands to do any nail art.  That changes today!

Artsy Wednesday: Vintage

I wanted to tip a hat to the aesthetic of the '20s-'30s, and did a sort of Art Deco/Geometric manicure with vampy, glamorous colors for this one!

I channeled Doris Duke a bit, with her embrasure of geometric patterns, and so I threw a tropical background into these pictures to further the effect!
I used Julep's Trina and Sienna for the luxe colors, and used striping tape to get the diamond patterns.  I love the fancy french tip concept, and with the striping tape this look really is a breeze; just make an X at the tip of your finger with the striping tape and paint the tip color over the gaps in the X.  Peel the tape off, and voila!

Artsy Wednesday: Pastels

Watercolor manicure time! I used Zoya polishes for this beaut, Gaia as the base, and Jaime, Blu and Neely for the watercolor effects.

Watercolor manicures are super easy; dot one-three small dots of polish (straight from the bottle brush) on your painted/topcoated nail, then dab a small brush with pure acetone (no gelatin, no fragrances, no non-acetone; pure acetone is a must for this) on the polish dots. The polish will spread as you continue to dab, creating lovely dreamy watercolor-like dots of color.

Artsy Wednesday: A color I usually hate

I tend to really dislike caramel colored polish against my skin; it can lean so yellow as to be atrociously ugly, or so red as to look almost ketchupy (or make my nails look like wounds, gross!).  I tried to harmonize a caramelly colored polish with my skin by adding metallic peachy tips; I think it turned out okay!

Artsy Wednesday: Re-do your first blogged Nail Art

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

My first blogged nail art is here: Memorial Day Manicure.  Not too shabby for just starting out!  I decided an exact duplicate manicure would be boring, so this is more of an "Inspired By" type of thing :)

I busted out my good old Orly Stone Cold and Rock-It; these colors are so stunning I can hardly stand it!  Plus, they're one-coaters. I'll always fall in love with a one-coater.  The holo triangles and stars are Gosh Holographic Hero.

The white is Milani White on the Spot, and I just had to jazz it up a bit.  I won a  Shimmer Polish giveaway a few months ago, and that blue beauty was a perfect way to snazz up my manicure!  Shimmer Polishes are really impressive; packed with glitter, but not goopy, no taco glitters, easy application and not too topcoat hungry either.  Impressive!

Artsy Wednesday: Inspired by Graffiti

I knew I wasn't going to be able to really emulate graffiti with this manicure; I've never been that good at sharp outlines, so I wanted to take the "inspired by" of this week's theme and run with it.

I was fortunate enough to win a set of MASH nail art brushes from a giveaway Set in Lacquer ran, and I wanted to give the fan brush a shot, to add artistic strokes of bright colors to my  nails.

I used Julep's Eileen as a base, and the It Girl April colors, Eden, Abbie and Mackenzie as the bright bright bright graffiti stripes.  The white base really made these colors pop, and the manicure kind of reminds me of fruit stripe gum.

Artsy Wednesday: Easter!

Easter has the best candy of any holiday.

That has nothing to do with today's manicure, chicks in Easter grass.  I've thought a few times that Zoya's Pixiedust shade Vespa was a pretty perfect Easter grass shade, and Creamy is the perfect baby chick yellow.  By their powers combined (plus some Angelina and Pia for eyes and beaks), we have chicks in Easter Grass!

Little cuties :)

Artsy Wednesday: Leaves, or The Manicure that would not Photograph

I've been a big fan of using paper punches in nail art for a while.  In my Valentines manicure I used punches on tape to create a template, and in this manicure I've done something of the opposite; painted tape with nail polish and then used the punch to make a little nail decal I can stick right on my nail!

I painted 2 coats of Zoya's Ivanka onto a strip of cellotape stretched across the lid of a Trader Joe's candy box, and let it dry thoroughly.  I then punched a whole bunch of leaves out of the tape using my paper punch I got at Michaels.  Stick 'em on your nail, topcoat away, and bam, insta-nail-art!

This manicure WOULD NOT PHOTOGRAPH WELL.  I think Ivanka was just too shiny/shimmery/beautiful to photograph properly, so this was the best I could get.  It doesn't show off the outlines of the leaves well, but I still endorse this method to get quick nail art.  Plus, it's fun, and if you're already a scrapbooker you now have multitaskers in your scrapbook supplies!
